Hidden in Plain Sight - Screenings

WORLD SOCIAL FORUM

Our filmmaking team, John, Viví, and Andrés, just returned from showing our documentary, HIDDEN IN PLAIN SIGHT, at the World Social Forum in Porto Alegre, Brazil.

______

The World Social Forum, which took place on January 22-28, was one of the most inspiring experiences we have ever had. There was so much energy, conviviality, and hope! Created as a democratic alternative to the oligarchic World Economic Forum held each January in Davos, Switzerland, the Social Forum sets out to prove, in the words of its motto, that "Another World is Possible."

______

Over 100,000 people from more than 100 countries gathered at panels, workshops, speeches, and celebrations aimed at finding answers and alternatives to war, poverty, hunger, corporate-led globalization, and the current world order. Speakers like Noam Chomsky, Medea Benjamin, Arundhati Roy, Eduardo Galeano, Susan George, Maude Barlow, and new Brazilian President Lula da Silva gave powerful speeches demonstrating that the current world order just does not work for the vast majority of people and also for our planet.

______

We were touched deeply by the spirit of resistance and indefatigable progressivism we encountered, and not just at Forum events but on the streets and in restaurants. Twice during our last evening in town, groups of people stood up in the restaurant and began to sing Ole, ole, ole ola; Luåla, Lula, in support of their new president, a bright and humble man who comes from the working class and wants to feed rather than arm his people. We left Brazil feeling in our hearts that another world is indeed possible. As Arundhati Roy eloquently put it: "Another world is not only possible, she is on her way, and on a quiet day, if you listen very carefully, you can hear her breathing."

______

We screened our documentary twice and got hundreds of enthusiastic responses and numerous invitations to show and discuss the film in various parts of the world. It was an incredible experience being able to share our documentary with so many people from around the world, particularly from Latin American countries. Several professors from universities in Brazil, Panama, Costa Rica, the United States, and Poland want to show the film to their students. So the next step for us is to translate HIDDEN IN PLAIN SIGHT into several languages. Thanks to this great event we came back with new energy. It is difficult being in this country right now as our rulers prepare for war and their propaganda machine goes into overdrive, but we have to keep going, keep speaking our own message for peace, truth and justice.

In the next few months, John will be traveling, presenting our documentary across the country and discussing the issues it confronts. We welcome any help/suggestions you might have.

En paz!

Our team.
